Last 29 May 2017, we had our Unit Heads Training (Orientation) for Cluster A household heads and up. It was a first for me so I don't have the slightest idea as to what will transpire during the said training but since the title is already a giveaway, I had a bit of expectation in mind. It didn’t turn out as I expected it to be but it turned out to be something even greater than that.
The training consists of two talks. The discussion on the first talk mainly focuses on setting our hearts on the goal of our calling for the service, taking after God’s own heart. The first talk started with the question about having the proper vision for our service which, I believe, made many of us present there to evaluate our own reasons and perceptions. We may have been asked by our heads to take on the responsibility but it should be made clear to all that more than that it is a calling to be “a servant of God”. It is never easy to answer such call for with it comes fear and doubt. But like our brothers and sisters before us whom God called to be His disciples, God assures us that “He is always with us” that alone is enough for God is enough. If it is God who called us, it is Him who will empower us. How are we able to do it? To be the loving, wise and prudent shepherd that God called us to be. Prayer. We need to have a prayerful attitude for it is God’s strength that we need to depend on and not our own. We need to seek Him always through His words and live based on it. God has equipped us with the gifts and resources to serve Him and His people. Should the time come that we start to doubt our own capability, always remember that God is committed to empowering us. We only need to be dedicated to Him and humbly serve Him and those He has entrusted upon us. The task at hand may be overwhelming but take delight knowing that we are God’s servants whom He called to be the shepherds of His people taking after His own heart and empowered by His spirit.
The second talk is mainly focused on the definition of the unit which was defined as a composition of 3-5 households. More so it discussed about the qualifications, roles, duties and responsibilities of the unit head. God does not look at our qualifications but such great responsibility needs someone whose heart has been set in the ways of God so he can look after the household heads and those under their care. Look after in the sense of closely monitoring the members through pastoral visit of each household to get to know more the leaders and its members. Ensure that the duties and responsibilities of the members are also met such as tithings, attending of teachings and households. Ensure the spiritual growth in Christ through worship, prayer time and look for potential leaders in the members of the group. As the head of the unit, he serves more than he is served for it is God's calling of not only evangelizing but to be the shepherd of His people. A humble servant that is able to radiate God’s love through obedience, commitment and faithfulness to the community.
The training was concluded by a workshop wherein we are grouped into four. Each group were given two scenarios which are common dilemmas the community faces or might face. The group has to act out the given scenario and take their stand on the situation. The scenarios may have been acted out lightly nevertheless the gravity of each should not be taken lightly for the welfare and growth of the community and its members.
In whatever situation we find ourselves in the service to God always remember that love is always the key for it doesn’t stop on introducing Christ alone but it calls for a continuous care. We are accountable for our brothers and sisters who are under our care as shepherds of God.
May God be praised!
